Aims

Oncology is fast becoming one of the most common disciplines employed in general practice. Client education regarding canine and feline cancers is paramount to the future of the pet's welfare. The veterinary nurse has an integral part in communication between the client and the veterinary surgeon, administration of treatment, health and safety of clients/veterinary staff and support in chemotherapy units/clinics.

This course is an introduction to the role of the oncology nurse and setting up an oncology clinic.

The course will also benefit veterinary surgeons wishing to set up an oncology service within general practice.

Objectives

Overview of learning objectives

  • Biology of neoplasia

  • Ethics of neoplasia treatment in the canine and feline patient

  • Identify and discuss oncological emergencies

  • Sample preparation and cytology interpretation in practice (practical)

  • Set up of a chemotherapy unit/clinic in general practice

  • Health and safety (staff and owner)

At the end of the lesson, you will be able to:

  • Discuss the biology of cancer and paraneoplastic disease

  • Describe the principles, challenges and ethics of cancer treatment in dogs and cats

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the significance of drug safety, staff, and owner protection

  • Evaluate the unique challenges of starting an oncology clinic - practicalities of administering chemotherapy and management of clients

  • Identify and understand oncological emergencies

  • Explain how systemic management of tumours can be achieved through chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapy

Includes a practical session on oncological cytology

Summary

This course is interprofessional and suitable for:

  • Veterinary nurses
  • Veterinary surgeons, particularly new graduates and vets wanting to refresh their skills

It is also ideal for nurses and vets to attend together from the same practice.
