Over the last 19 years, Improve International has enabled thousands of vets working in general practice to develop core clinical skills and gain additional postgraduate qualifications in more than 20 different subjects. The next step in this process of lifelong learning is a series of new modular programmes and qualifications designed specifically for vets who wish to advance their knowledge and skills in their area of clinical interest. These new programmes will be accredited by the European School of Veterinary Postgraduate Studies (ESVPS) and validated by Harper Adams University in the UK (40 credits at Masters Level). Delegates will be able to gain a General Practitioner Advanced Certificate awarded by ESVPS with the possibility of upgrading to a Postgraduate Diploma.

Is this programme for me?


You will be an experienced vet with an existing good knowledge of the principles of small animal surgery and particularly small animal orthopaedics.
You will probably have already undertaken additional training in the subject and gained a General Practitioner Certificate in Small Animal Surgery (GPCertSAS) or an equivalent qualification.
You will have a strong interest in the subject and the desire to continually improve your knowledge and skills.
You would like to carry on your studies in the same subject and learn new, more advanced techniques that you can take back into your practice.
You would like to gain a higher-level qualification in the subject.

In order to undertake this higher level programme, you will need to hold a GPCert(SAS) although there will be an Accredited Prior Learning (APL) route for those vets who can demonstrate that they already have a good knowledge of the subject and who wish to pass straight to the examination without undertaking a taught programme. Achieving the GPCert(SAS) would then enable registration for the Advanced Certificate programme.

Programme structure

The course programme will be delivered in three, five-day blocks of teaching using three different state of the art training facilities Two speakers will tutor each of these five-day blocks. Group size will be strictly limited to enable an excellent learning experience. Experienced world-renowned clinicians (ECVS or ACVS Diplomates) will provide delegates with the very latest information about new developments in small animal orthopaedics. Step by step decision making processes will enable delegates to make the best choice when treating patients with orthopaedic conditions. Numerous case-examples will be used to help delegates relate their theoretical knowledge to clinical practice. A high level of practical instruction in a wet-lab environment will allow delegates to practice these new surgical techniques with close supervision from the two course speakers. There will also be demonstrations of some of the more complex orthopaedic procedures such as CUE, PAUL and THR. Availability of radiography will enable delegates to critically assess their practical work.

  • Develop further confidence and competence in small animal orthopaedics as a natural progression from the Postgraduate Certificate in Small Animal Surgery or an equivalent award.

  • Meet like- minded colleagues and share information about case management
  • Meet and learn from world class speakers – two ECVS or ACVS Orthopaedic Specialists will be present at each module
  • Gain the GP Advanced Certificate in Small Animal Orthopaedic Surgery and use this qualification as a route to a Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Practice Sciences awarded by Harper Adams University

Summary

This 15 module programme has been designed for veterinary surgeons who want to progress their orthopaedic skills to the next level. Each module will be presented by two orthopaedic specialists (ECVS or ACVS diplomates) allowing delegates plenty of opportunity to ask questions and receive practical instruction. A step-by-step decision making process will help delegates to make the best choice in treating orthopaedic conditions and numerous case studies will be used to place theoretical concepts into practice.


Practical hands on experience will be gained on every module in excellent wet lab facilities at three different European venues. The latest equipment will be provided to accelerate your learning. Delegates will also be able to observe demonstrations of more complex procedures such as CUE, PAUL and THR. The availability of radiography will allow delegates to critically assess their practical work.


The sessions will be complemented by an online learning platform providing access to notes, case discussions via a closed forum and further resources such as videos and reading references.

Previous experience to certificate level in small animal orthopaedics is essential in order to benefit most from this course.

Module (class) -1 - Pelvic Surgery I - Coxofemoral Luxation & Hip Dysplasia

  • Diagnosis and treatment of coxofemoral luxations
  • Diagnosis and treatment of hip dysplasia
  • How to treat a luxated hip using a toggle pin or an ileofemoral sling
  • How to perform a juvenile symphysiodesis
  • How to perform a triple pelvic osteotomy

Delegates will practise the above procedures in a wet-lab environment. Delegates will also have the chance to practice TPOs on plastic bones.

  • Complications of Total Hip Replacement
  • How to perform Total Hip Replacement using the Biomedtrix system (CFX, BFX and hybrid)
  • How to perform Total Hip Replacement using the PorteVet system (cemented and cementedless)

Demonstrations of total hip replacement procedures using the Biomedtrix and PorteVet system will be performed in a wet lab environment.
