Aims

Pain recognition is a subjective and complex field that is continually evolving. Chronic pain has a substantial impact on a patient's quality of life. It is imperative that the veterinary team are able to identify and evaluate pain to manage it correctly while also supporting the needs of the client.

This interprofessional course aims to delve into the mechanism of nociception and pain modulation looking at pain classification, assessment techniques and the various methods available to manage the chronic pain patient.

Objectives

Learning objectives:

  • Explain the primary mechanism of nociception and pain modulation

  • Pain classification concerning temporal, physiologic aspects and location (acute vs chronic pain; adaptive vs non-adaptive; somatic vs visceral)

  • Identify the different assessment techniques for evaluating muscular pain and superficial sensory disturbances

  • Discuss the various methods of managing chronic pain

Summary

This course is interprofessional and suitable for:

  • Veterinary nurses
  • Veterinary surgeons, particularly new graduates and vets wanting to refresh their skills

It is also ideal for nurses and vets to attend together from the same practice.
