Skin Reconstruction - Purely Practical

Aims

This one-day course will have a no-lecture or minimal-lecture format. You will be sent the course notes in advance of the course and should ensure you have read them before attending as formal classroom lectures will not occur. All of your time will be spent in the practical room practising the techniques included in the learning objectives to maximise your opportunity to master the surgical skills being taught.

Objectives

By the end of this one-day course you will be able to:

  • Understand the difference between random pattern flaps, axial pattern flaps and free skin grafts based on vascular anatomy and practical application
  • Choose an appropriate surgical technique to close traumatic or surgical skin defects in various anatomical locations
  • Select a local skin flap to close a defect
    • Which direction should you advance in?
    • Where will a V-Y plasty reduce tension?
    • How do you complete a Z-plasty?
    • When is an axillary or flank fold an appropriate choice for defects on the legs and trunk?
  • Perform axial pattern flaps with confidence – practise some of all of the following (time allowing)
    • Caudal auricular
    • Omocervical
    • Thoracodorsal
    • Cranial /Caudal Superficial Epigastric
    • Superficial Brachial
    • Dorsal iliac
    • Caudal
    • Scrotal
    • Genicular
    • Reverse Saphenous
  • Create a free skin graft and understand how to manage them to maximise their chances of success
  • Use negative pressure wound therapy with confidence to speed wound healing

Summary

Comprehensive course notes, refreshments throughout the day and a buffet lunch will be provided.
