Aims

Local anaesthetic techniques are potentially the most effective analgesia for many small animal surgeries, yet they are often underused in general practice. This course will provide a comprehensive insight into the common local anaesthetic drugs and blocks used which a competent veterinary nurse can administer under Schedule 3.

This course is suitable for both veterinary nurses and veterinary surgeons wishing to update their knowledge of local anaesthetic techniques and those that are studying further qualifications in anaesthesia.

Objectives

Overview of learning objectives:

  • Overview of analgesia

  • Pharmacology of local anaesthesia drugs

  • Indications for local anaesthesia

  • Various types of nerve blocks and when they are used (including practical sessions on cadavers)

  • Nerve stimulation

At the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Explain the benefits of incorporating a local anaesthetic technique into any anaesthetic for a painful procedure

  • Describe how local anaesthetics work

  • Detail how to place the different local anaesthetic blocks listed

  • Discuss how to use local anaesthetic techniques safely

  • Explain the use of techniques such as transcutaneous nerve stimulation and ultrasound-guided techniques

Summary

This course is interprofessional and suitable for:

  • Veterinary nurses
  • Veterinary surgeons, particularly new graduates and vets wanting to refresh their skills

It is also ideal for nurses and vets to attend together from the same practice.
