  • Blood products, product management and whole blood collection
  • Erythrocyte antigens and the immune system
  • Anaemia
  • Haemostasis and common coagulation abnormalities
  • Transfusion considerations and blood product administration
  • Adverse transfusion reactions
  • Autotransfusions, cell salvage, xenotransfusions and transfusion in other species

Summary

The course is designed to improve the transfusion medicine knowledge of veterinary nurses/Technicians and veterinary paraprofessionals and will be at an appropriate level for nurses working in both referral and general practice. The emphasis will be on understanding when, why and how transfusions are given and how to collect and administer blood safely to maximise donor and recipient safety. The introduction of blood banking and the blood products they make available will be covered and how they are manufactured, transported and stored for optimal quality. The conditions blood products can be used to manage along with an explanation of aetiology, physical examination findings, clinical signs and associated testing will be discussed. The fundamental principles of blood types will be covered, and discussion of how and when to use compatibility testing to maximise transfusion efficacy. The course will provide a good understanding of the aims and risks of transfusions and how to carry out recipient monitoring to detect adverse transfusion reactions and then how they are managed.

The aim is for the delegate to confidently take a proactive and significant role in transfusion cases in their practice and promote good, evidence-based practice.

Our online learning management system Moodle, provides access to course notes, discussion forums, and other study resources.

The programme course fees INCLUDE registration with ISVPS and all of the examination and assessment fees.

All of our nurse modular programmes have a dedicated programme tutor, who will support you every step of the way. You’ll also have support and guidance from module tutors who are specialists in their module subjects across 8 varied and interactive modules delivered over 15 months.

The course comprises of 8 modules in total with a module being delivered every other month.  The module content is divided into four weeks of teaching with the aim that the learning objectives are covered in the first three weeks and delivered via nine online lessons, each of which is about 40-60 minutes long. The module is concluded with either two interactive case studies (where appropriate) or delegates writing MCQs as part of a reflective study within week four.

During the months that are between module delivery, delegates will also be provided additional study skills sessions aiding the delegate to develop their reflective skills. This will help them in their clinical assessments and revision of their learning, which can be used within their future career.

Once you join you will be part of an international programme with participants from all over the world.
